|Match||Wilbury Vets v Royston Town Vets|
|Royston Scorers||Leete(4), Lewis, Daniels|
Town Vets made a slow start to their match against Wilbury played in baking conditions and on a hard surface with little grass at Letchworth Grange sports field but finally prevailed with a thumping 6-1 win.
The hosts created a number of good openings and hit the post and the bar before Town began to gain a measure of control in the game.
After 30 minutes Nick Humphries harried the ‘keeper into conceding possession and when the ball fell loose on the edge of the 18-yard area Peter Leete calmly slotted home Town’s first goal. Most of the remainder of the first half was contested in the middle third of the pitch and the score stayed at 1-0 at the break.
Town looked more dangerous from the kick-off in the second half and put the home defence under constant pressure. Another goalkeeping error resulted in Paul Lewis winning possession and his pass set up Leete to tap in to increase Town’s lead. Leete then completed his hat-trick when he headed in John Moulding’s cross.
Wilbury deservedly reduced the arrears when Town’s hitherto rock-solid defence marshalled by Matt McQueen was for once caught square and a forward raced through to leave ‘keeper Simon Dobson with no chance of saving.
Almost immediately afterwards Town broke down the left with Lewis forcing the defence to concede a corner and from the resultant kick Moulding delivered an excellent inswinging ball to the far post and Leete rose to score with a fine header to take his personal tally and the team’s to four goals.
Lewis then added his name to the score-sheet when he headed in Humphries cross from the left wing.
Dave Daniels pace and clever footwork had troubled Wilbury’s defence throughout and he was duly rewarded with a stunning goal following a mesmerizing dribble into the 18-yard area and a well-directed shot into the corner of the net to complete the scoring.
