The ‘Business End’ of the season

The lads did it again!

Well done boys. As per time of year and importance of game, the result is the priority. Yes free and flowing football is always the request but not always delivered!

Nevertheless still proud of each and everyone of the players.

Any away win is an achievement, regardless of quality of opposition. Fleet have had a mixed season. Recent good results signified an upturn but early season losses have kept them mid-table.

Obviously the journey as well as their pitch took a while to adjust to. The fact that we went up the slope first was in my opinion an advantage. A tough first period was fought out. Us edging it, mainly due to the superior possession we had. A few silly fouls put us under needless pressure but generally we coped with everything well and were just seeking that little bit of quality in their final third to put us ahead.

Half-time 0-0. Fair reflection due to us not testing their keeper enough and their attack doing likewise.

Second half started brightly enough for us but still with no real tests. Frustrating with us being on top so much!!

Simon Thomas came to the rescue once again. “Thomo” is starting to settle in and producing what he can really do!

1-0 now to push on. I changed things slightly, Martel Powell coming off for Gary Cohen and Ryan Towner on for Ryan Ingrey. Sometimes fresher legs, new approach works, sometimes not but just to re-inject a different perspective. This occasion one of our subs in Towns got on the end of a scrappy encounter in their box. 2-0.

For me one disappointment was their late goal which blotted the defenders copybook. As said though, the win is all important.

We move on to 2 “Winnable” games at home.

We should be full of confidence and bar Jack we are getting a full strength, full quality squad.

Lastly a big welcome to both Ryan Frater and Martel Powell. Ryan I know very well. He spent over 3 years with me at St Albans. After that clubs like St Neots, Biggleswade and Arlesey all in the Southern League Premier. A vastly experienced centre half who can be a great addition.

Martel has also come to us from higher opposition in Wingate & Finchley. With a change in management at Wingate, Martel found himself wanting a different team and through Chris asked to come down to prove himself to us. Good luck to you both lads.

Down to 12 games now. “The business end” of the season.

Hopefully everyone is looking forward to this period. It will be tight. It seems that every week another twist comes along in regards to the League. Good news for us is that it’s in our own hands at the moment. We want to be the “Boring” team that keeps churning out 3 points week in week out starting with our next two homes matches.

Cheers,
SC
