Town Vets finally ran out 4-2 winners but old rivals Buntingford pushed them all the way and the result was by no means certain with only a few minutes to go.
Town started confidently and deservedly took the lead after 10 minutes from a Peter Leete header at the far post.
The home ‘keeper then gifted Tow a second soon after when an attempted clearance ended up in his own net. Stuart Brown came on mid way through the half to make his Vets debut and he quickly added composure to the back four.
Town created further good chances but failed to convert and when Buntingford did get mount an attack they found ‘keeper Simon Dobson in fine form.
After the break Buntingford started to threaten and reduced the arrears when a shot deflected off a Town defender and looped over Dobson in Town’s goal. The hosts were soon level when Town failed to clear a free kick on the left and a Buntingford forward slid the ball in at the far post.
Town regained the initiative and took the lead again when Kevin Barthrop coolly slotted home number three following a good cross from Paul Lewis.
In the last few minutes a Buntingford defender handled in the penalty box and Lewis made no mistake from the spot kick.
