St Neots Town 0 Royston Town 2 (Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division) att 35.
I tend to focus on this particular division of the Thurlow Nunn Youth league because most sides in it are based not too far from home and I like to try and work out who is going to win it. As things stand at present it seems that the winners will either be Biggleswade Town or Royston Town, with the outsiders being Saffron Walden Town and Newmarket Town. I would usually include St Neots Town in the contenders, but they have had some difficult games against some of the aforementioned sides, with minimal success. But they like Histon are no mugs and as the season progresses they may eventually be in the shake up as well. Tonight the difference was that unbeaten Royston looked technically slightly better than St Neots. They were bigger and more robust as well and on top of that they had their loud manager kicking every ball with them. We could all hear him very clearly, even though he was on the other side of the pitch! It was they who took the lead on 21 minutes when the St Neots keeper, under pressure from Louie Debnam, couldn’t keep hold of a ball which he should have held on to and after having his first shot blocked the scorer fired home the rebound between two defenders with the keeper AWOL. St Neots had their moments, notably just before the break when they had a mini barrage of corners. The deciding goal came on 54 minutes, via another, more obvious, cockup from the home keeper and once again he couldn’t keep hold of the ball under pressure from Debnam and he shot home off a defender on the line. The said keeper was lucky not to get sent off on 80 minutes when he took out an attacker just outside the box, but the ref only showed him a yellow card. By now Royston were coasting and although St Neots made them work hard for their victory there was little doubt that it was going to come.
